5 Common Ecuador Visa Mistakes That Cost You Time and Money
After helping hundreds of people with their Ecuador visas, I've seen the same mistakes over and over again. These errors can cost you months of time and thousands of dollars. Here's what to avoid:
1. Not Getting Documents Apostilled in Time
This is the #1 mistake I see. Many people don't realize that background checks and other documents need to be apostilled AND they expire after 6 months. If you wait too long to submit your application, you'll need to get new documents.
The Fix:
- Get your apostille immediately after receiving documents
- Mark expiration dates on your calendar
- Submit your application within 4 months of apostille date to be safe
2. Incomplete Bank Statements
Immigration requires specific formatting for bank statements. Simply downloading from your bank's website often isn't enough.
The Fix:
- Request official bank statements on letterhead
- Ensure statements show 3-6 months of consistent income
- Get statements stamped and signed by your bank if possible
3. Wrong Translation Format
Ecuador requires certified translations by registered translators. Google Translate won't cut it, and even professional translations need proper certification.
The Fix:
- Use only certified translators registered in Ecuador
- Ensure translations include translator's registration number
- Keep originals and translations together
4. Applying for the Wrong Visa Type
I've seen people apply for Professional visas when they qualified for Digital Nomad visas (much easier). Or retirement visas when Rentista was a better fit.
The Fix:
- Schedule a free consultation to discuss your situation
- Consider ALL visa types you qualify for
- Choose the path with least resistance, not most prestigious
5. Not Having a Local Contact Person
Immigration will need to reach you during processing. Without a local phone number or address, your application can stall for months.
The Fix:
- Arrive in Ecuador before applying (recommended)
- Get an Ecuadorian SIM card immediately
- Have a rental agreement or hotel confirmation ready
